THE EMJAY BYPASS FEASIBILITY STUDY
Location: Brentwood, Town of Islip, Suffolk County, NY
Project Summary
The Emjay Industrial Site sits to the immediate west of a residential community identified as an Environmental Justice (EJ) area. The community is comprised of mainly minority and immigrant residents. Currently, trucks can access the existing Emjay industrial site only by travelling through the adjacent residential community. Situated along the Long Island Expressway, the travel pattern in these communities follow a commuter travel pattern with traffic delays and congestion during the AM and PM Peak periods. Therefore, there is community interest in decongesting the local roadway network and one of the ways is to divert truck traffic, bound towards Emjay Blvd, away from these communities and its main access roadways (Crooked Hill Rd, Wicks Rd/5th Ave/Suffolk Ave).
The Emjay Bypass Feasibility Study presents potential routes for a new bypass roadway which could link the commercial truck traffic to/from the intermodal truck/rail-based businesses at the existing Emjay Boulevard Industrial Site to/from other commercial roadways in the project area, and away from the adjacent residential community.
